Observations and operational model simulations reveal the impact of Hurricane Matthew (2016) on the Gulf Stream and coastal sea level

•The impact of Hurricane Matthew is evaluated from models and observations.•The hurricane caused large temporary weakening in the Gulf Stream flow.•Coastal sea level increased due to both storm surge and Gulf Stream weakening.•Statistics of the Florida Current suggest influence from storms on seasonal pattern.
