Towards operational forecasts of algal blooms and pathogens

This chapter describes on-going regional projects sponsored by the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and its partners to forecast harmful algal blooms and water-borne pathogens in waters of the US coastal oceans and Great Lakes. Collectively, these provide an introduction to the general problems, the approaches employed, the products generated, and the on-going attempts to improve these ecological forecasts and transition them into operational products and services.
