•Predators and prey often adapt their behaviors simultaneously when interacting.•This co-adaptation is rarely considered in population dynamics models.•We consider both behavior and population dynamics for several populations.•We provide an example of this general method in a diel vertical migration context.•We highlight further consequences for ecosystem functions such as carbon export.
