I have published over 370 peer review papers and book chapters.
I have worked on lampreys throughout my academic career. Lampreys are an important group of vertebrates for the following reasons. 1) As they are one of the two surviving groups of jawless fishes, and thus represent an early offshoot of the vertebrate lineage, they are frequently used for elucidating trends exhibited during early vertebrate evolution. 2) They are one of the most numerous vertebrates in many rivers in temperate regions of the Northern and Southern Hemispheres and thus play a key role in the ecology of those systems. 3) The adult parasitic phase in the life cycle of certain species has also been responsible for massive mortalities among important recreational and commercial fish species. My work on lampreys has involved studies of the taxonomy and evolution of this group and has focused in particular on the taxa found in the Southern Hemisphere, about which little was known prior to my PhDI have worked on lampreys throughout my academic career. I have also collaborated with a number of colleagues on ecological, physiological and biochemical studies on lampreys. The results of the ecological studies have led to a greater understanding of the duration of life, growth and behaviour of the different phases in the life cycles of a number of species.
