Research Interests
Tropical intraseasonal variability, tropical – extra-tropical interactions of the North American monsoon region, tropical deep convective organization and processes, GPS total column water measurement and application, regional modeling and forecasting, process-oriented evaluation of global climate and earth system models.
Her work focuses on exploring tropical intraseasonal variability and its relationship to the mean climate. Dr. Serra also has an interest in tropical - extra-tropical interactions that influence the North American monsoon including easterly waves, tropical cyclones, intraseasonal modes of the tropical eastern North Pacific and teleconnections from the global tropics. Dr. Serra's group also investigates the role of water vapor in the initiation and organization of deep convection in the arid Southwest US and in the Tropics. These areas of research contribute to the current understanding of convective processes in the tropics and sub-tropics and of the global water cycle, with important consequences for operational forecasts on synpotic to seasonal time scales, as well as for climate projections.
To investigate these issues the group relies on observations from in situ and satellite platforms including surface meteorological instrumentation, radiosondes, surface GPS, and satellite microwave, visible and infrared sensors. The group additionally relies on global gridded reanalysis products for the atmosphere, free-running global climate models for atmospheric projections and their own high-resolution regional simulations using NCAR's Advanced Research Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF-ARW) model.
